COLLEGE BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 CONFERENCE : Arizona Gets a Big Boost From Stokes
Ed Stokes came off the bench, and No. 11 Arizona was off and running.
Khalid Reeves, Chris Mills and the 7-foot Stokes combined for 40 of their 54 points in the second half as Arizona beat Pittsburgh, 96-76, Saturday at Tucson.
The Wildcats scored eight consecutive points to end the first half, 34-34, and 11 more to start the second half.
“Ed became a factor immediately upon entering the game,” Arizona Coach Lute Olson said. “He was actively pursuing the ball, not just near the basket but all over the court. He was like a guard out there running out.”
Stokes scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half.
The Panthers (11-8), who led by 10 points midway through the first half, pulled within 65-60 with 7:44 left on Sean Miller’s third three-pointer. Pitt had trailed, 53-39, with 14:46 to play.
But Stokes dunked, Reeves converted two free throws and Stokes another, and the Wildcats (13-3) never led by less than eight after that.
Washington 72, Oregon 71--Mark Pope scored a rebound basket with 46 seconds left to give the Huskies a victory at Eugene, Ore.
Rick Manning had 26 points and Doug Meekins had 25 for Washington (9-6, 3-2). Oregon fell to 5-10 and 1-5.
