Search Continues for Boater From Newhall

The U.S. Coast Guard continued the search Tuesday for a 43-year-old Newhall man who took his 30-foot pleasure boat out for a one-hour cruise Saturday and has not been heard from since.

Robert Axelrod left Newport Harbor alone at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, said Petty Officer William Atkinson. His wife reported him missing early Sunday morning when he did not return home.

The Coast Guard on Tuesday checked harbors from Los Angeles to San Diego, Atkinson said. Coast Guard vessels, two helicopter crews, a Falcon jet and the Harbor Patrol have searched about 4,000 square miles from Palos Verdes to Dana Point and Santa Catalina Island, he said.

A capsized life raft belonging to Axelrod’s vessel, the Aimee, was found in the San Pedro Channel on Sunday.

It is not certain if the Coast Guard will continue the search today, Atkinson said.
