It probably never will be clear whether Earnest Killum’s activity on the basketball court contributed to his death, the cardiologist who cleared him to rejoin the Oregon State team said.

“It was an awful surprise, but not totally unexpected,” said John McAnulty, cardiology professor at Oregon Health Sciences University. “Everything about Earnest raised the possibility he would have a bad event, whether it be a stroke or something else. We couldn’t be sure.”

Killum, who suffered from a rare vascular condition, died Jan. 20 after collapsing at a hotel in Los Angeles.
