COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Bladow Pitches Three-Hitter; Irvine Wins, 8-0

Senior right-hander David Bladow pitched a three-hitter as UC Irvine defeated Loyola Marymount, 8-0, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday that was the season opener for both teams.

Baldow walked the first batter he faced then retired the next nine. Bladow, who was 5-7 last season, had seven strikeouts.

Irvine scored a single run in the first inning, added four in the fifth, and three more in the eighth. Junior Corey Parker, a transfer from Orange Coast, had two hits including a run-scoring double in the first.

Matt Filson had two hits and an RBI and Billy Bardens drove in two runs. Every starter had at least one hit for Anteaters, who collected 11.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 108, Point Loma Nazarene 78--Rick Witmer made 12 of 18 shots, including seven of eight three-pointers, to score 31 points for host Southern California College (16-5, 3-1). SCC made 10 of 11 three-point tries in the second half.

In a Big West Conference women’s basketball game:

Hawaii 92, Cal State Fullerton 77--Senior Claudette Jackson scored 39 points for host Cal State Fullerton (7-9, 2-5). Jackson was 13 of 26 from the field and made 13 of 13 free-throw attempts.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 82, Biola 73--Nancy Geisler scored 20 points for Christ College Irvine (16-3). Teammate Genevieve Graff had seven assists.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 7, Westmont 0--Laurent Dropsy held off four match points in the third set to win No. 3 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) for host Chapman (1-0).

In Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. play:

UC Irvine 3, San Diego State 2--Leland Quinn had 32 kills and 14 digs for UC Irvine (2-2, 1-2). Teammate Chad Milling had eight blocks.
