This column is based on the newly revised "Light Style: The Low Fat, Low Cholesterol, Low Salt Way to Good Food and Good Health," by Dosti and Kidushim-Allen, a registered dietitian (HarperSanFrancisco: $14.95)

The fresh herbs in this creamy, low-fat garlic ranch dressing distinguish it from the bottled brands. There are no preservatives or added salt, and it is low in cholesterol and fat. And there’s another bonus: The dressing is far lower in cost than its commercial counterpart.

1 tablespoon chopped sage or 1 teaspoon dried sage

1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dill weed
