SPECIAL EVENT : Victorian Valentines Are a Change of Heart
These days, thanks to greeting card manufacturers, Valentine’s Day sentiments come pre-fab. We buy our heartfelt emotions off the rack--maybe humorous, maybe racy, maybe even romantic.
Things were different in Victorian times, as kids will have a chance to learn Saturday and again on Feb. 8 in workshops offered by the Children’s Museum at La Habra.
In those days, valentines “were a lot more personal because everyone had to make their own. They didn’t buy them in a store,” says Audry Winkler, the museum’s art and craft coordinator.
Workshop participants, under Winkler’s direction, can make their own versions of Victorian valentines using ribbons, lace, pipe cleaners, paper hearts and doilies (all materials will be provided).
The workshops are open to children 5 to 12 years old.
What: Victorian valentine workshop.
When: Saturday, Feb. 1, and Feb. 8, noon to 1:30 p.m.
