What’s hot in the local video rental market? Let’s just say those wild women on wheels just keep rolling along. Here are the top five videos from a sampling of Ventura County video stores.

At Blockbuster Video in Port Hueneme: “Thelma and Louise” with Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis; “Point Break” with Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves; “Dying Young,” starring Julia Roberts; “Backdraft,” starring Kurt Russell; and “Dances with Wolves”--yes, still on the list--starring Kevin Costner.

At Video 4 You and Video Depot in Thousand Oaks: “Thelma and Louise,” “Point Break,” “City Slickers,” starring Billy Crystal, “Dutch” with Ed O’Neill and “Doc Hollywood,” starring Michael J. Fox.

And at Plaza Video in Ventura: “Point Break,” “Thelma and Louise,” “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, “Dying Young” and Spike Lee’s “Jungle Fever,” which was released Jan. 16 and stars Wesley Snipes and Annabella Sciorra.

The Ojai Film Society on Sunday will show the 1953 French movie “The Wages of Fear,” directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot and starring Yves Montand.

Based on the novel by Georges Arnaud, it is a story of four tramps in the small, quiet South American town of Los Piedras. They get an opportunity to put some excitement into their lives when they each are offered $2,000 to drive some nitroglycerin 300 miles on a route that isn’t exactly precision-paved.

This particular copy of the film is two hours and 28 minutes long, 43 minutes longer than the version originally released in the United States. Those missing scenes were edited out for fear that they would offend U.S. audiences.

Show time is 4:30 p.m. at the Ojai Playhouse, 145 E. Ojai Ave. Admission is $6.

While several travel film series continue in Ventura County, one recently bid a bon voyage. Moorpark College’s Community Services office has canceled the remainder of its 1991-1992 “Discovery Film Series,” due to low turnout.

Dolores McLaughlin, community services director, said 40 to 100 people attended each film. She said 100 people would be the minimum for the school to break even. McLaughlin said she doesn’t know if the series will be back for the next school year.

Next Thursday will be Caldecott writers time at the Ray D. Prueter Library family film night, featuring the works award-winning authors John Steptoe, Verna Aardema and Maurice Sendak.

First is the screen version of Steptoe’s “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters,” a story of two sisters--one nice and the other not so nice--who vie for attention.

Then its Aardema’s West African folk tale “Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears.” It goes into great, imaginative detail about how the mosquito came to annoy people.

Sendak’s classic “Where the Wild Things Are” will also be shown. It is the story of a disobedient boy named Max and his fantasy trip to a land of wild creatures.

The three films together are 32 minutes long. The first film is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 486-5460. The library is at 510 Park Ave., Port Hueneme.
