SPORTSCOPE : Bruins Meet Two Ranked Foes

The UCLA men’s swim team (4-3 overall, 1-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference) will make its last home appearances of the season when it meets No. 5 California (6-1, 0-1) at 1 p.m. Friday and No. 1 Stanford (4-0, 1-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Last weekend, the No. 9 Bruins went 1-1 on the road, defeating Arizona, 134-109, and losing to Arizona State, 171-112.

UCLA diver Kort Borg won the one-and three-meter events at both meets.

Against Arizona, the Bruin 400-metermedley relay team of Mark Thompson, Andrea Cecchi, Dan Kutler and Brian Kurza won in 3 minutes, 54.14 seconds. Kurza (23.67), Byron Davis and Chris Mann finished first through third in the 50-meter freestyle.

Against Arizona State, Cecchi won the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.72 and Davis won the 50-yardfreestyle in 20.48.

The UCLA women’s swim team, a 186-114 winner over USC last week, will compete in the Pac-10 championships Feb. 7-9 in Long Beach.

Against the Trojans, Julie Vogt won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.78 and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.45. Diver Kristen Walls won the one- and three-meter events. In the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yardbackstroke, the Bruins swept the first three places, with Natalie Norberg taking first in the 200 in 1:49.86 and Kristin Heydanek winning the 100 in 56.9.

Two Brentwood School football players, junior linebacker Kevin Gifford and junior defensive back Mike Green, were named to the All-Southern Section eight-man team selected by coaches in the Large Schools Division.

The top-ranked UCLA men’s tennis team (2-0) will play host to Washington today at 1:30 p.m. and to No. 25 South Florida at 1 p.m. Saturday. Last week, the Bruins beat UC Santa Barbara, 8-1, and Nevada Las Vegas, 8-1. Against both teams, the UCLA No. 1 doubles team of Fritz Bissell and Bill Barber swept their matches.

The No. 7 Pepperdine men’s tennis team, under first-year Coach Eliot Teltscher, will begin dual-match play by playing host to South Florida at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Standouts Howard Joffe, Ashley Naumann, Cary Lothringer and Ari Nathan are among eight returning lettermen. Newcomers include freshman Charles Auffray of France, sophomore Boaz Merenstein of Israel and junior Vince Mackey, a transfer from Cal State Long Beach and a graduate of University High in West Los Angeles.

The No. 4 UCLA women’s team (4-0) will play host to Nevada Las Vegas at 1 p.m. Saturday. Last week, the Bruins defeated UC Irvine, 8-1, and No. 11 Pepperdine, 6-3. Freshman Anne Mall played her first matches for UCLA, winning at No. 1 singles against Irvine and at No. 4 against the Waves. The No. 1 Bruin doubles team of Mamie Ceniza and Iwalani McCalla won their third and fourth consecutive matches without a loss.

The No. 11 Pepperdine women’s tennis team (3-1) will play at No. 18 University of San Diego on Saturday at 1 p.m. and play host to USC at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Last week the Waves lost to No. 4 UCLA, 6-3. Pepperdine’s Noelle Porter, Natasha Pospich and Merete Stockmann are each 4-0 in singles.

The No. 2 UCLA men’s volleyball team (3-1, 1-0 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.) will play at Loyola Marymount (0-4, 0-1 as the week began) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at No. 4 Pepperdine (7-0, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Last week, the Bruins won the 28th annual UC Santa Barbara invitational, defeating Brigham Young in four games in the final. UCLA setter Mike Sealy was named the tournament’s most valuable player and Jeff Nygaard had 22 kills and six blocks.

The No. 4 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team (7-0, 2-0 in the WIVA at the start of the week) will play at San Diego State (1-3, 0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and play host to No. 2 UCLA at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Last week, the Waves won a WIVA match from BYU in three games and finished third at the UC Santa Barbara invitational, defeating the Gauchos in four games. Pepperdine leaders are Tom Sorenson with 141 kills, Duane Cameron with 45 digs and Ian Clark with 33 blocks.
