Judge Orders Tests for Deputy Before Sentencing

A former Temple City sheriff’s station deputy who pleaded guilty Dec. 9 to theft and credit card fraud will be sent to state prison in Chino for diagnostic tests to determine his suitability for probation, a judge ruled Friday.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lance ordered the tests before sentencing Brent Mosley on June 1. The tests will help the judge decide whether the former deputy should be placed on probation or sent to prison for up to six years.

Mosley, 27, was one of three deputies and a civilian accomplice who admitted taking credit cards from 22 elderly motorists they stopped from February to June last year in the San Gabriel Valley. More than $120,000 of goods were purchased with the stolen credit cards.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Jodi Rafkin asked for the maximum sentence because Mosley betrayed public trust in police officers. Mosley’s defense attorney, William Elliott, asked for leniency, saying that a deputy sheriff is a target for violence in prison. The other three, who also pleaded guilty, will be sentenced later.
