Panel Opposes Halting County Employee Retreats
A Los Angeles County commission has recommended that county employees continue to be permitted to attend out-of-town retreats but that stronger steps be taken to control costs.
The Productivity Commission report was requested by county supervisors after Supervisor Gloria Molina complained that the county spent $729,546 on 90 retreats between July, 1988, and last June.
“The commission believes that the retreat process, when utilized correctly, is a valuable and necessary management tool,” said the commission report, which noted that 15 of the nation’s 25 most populated counties hold retreats.
The report also recommended that the county explore ways to reduce the costs of retreats, such as seeking discount rates at hotels and corporate and foundation grants.
