UC San Diego Rolls to Victory Against Whittier

The UC San Diego men’s basketball team, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, scored a 91-67 nonconference victory Friday night over visiting Whittier.

The Tritons stretched their winning streak to 11 games and improved to 16-4.

Whittier fell to 4-14.

UCSD had only two players score in double figures, Chris Moore with 28 and Erik Johnson with 16.

MEN’S TENNIS

Despite winning three of four singles matches, the University of San Diego lost to No. 3 Stanford, 5-4, in a nonconference match at Palo Alto in a 5-hour, 27-minute marathon.

Seventh-ranked Jose Luis Noriega defeated No. 3 Alex O’Brien, 6-4, 6-4, and unranked Fredrik Axsater of USD toppled 12th-ranked Michael Flanagen, 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), 6-1, in a 3 1/2-hour match. Ignacio Martinez also won for the Toreros (1-1).

Kevin Bradley and Phil Hofmann were USD’s only doubles’ winners. Stanford improved to 2-0.

BASEBALL

Mike Swanson, former media director with the San Diego Padres, was named director of media relations for the Colorado Rockies, an appointment that becomes effective March 15.

Swanson joined the Rockies’ front office after working last season as a researcher for ESPN’s baseball coverage. He was the Padres’ media relations director in 1990, and prior to that was the Padres’ assistant media relations director from 1984-89.

He also has worked with CBS Sports and ABC Sports as a statistician, and served six years in the Kansas City Royals’ public relations office.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Christy Stevens scored 21 points and Rochelle Lightner 18 to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 75-61 victory over UC San Diego in a nonconference game.

Stacee Eggers scored 14 and Camille Armijo added 11 for PLNC (14-6).

UCSD (9-7) held a 48-32 rebounding edge, but only two players scored in double figures, Cari Young, who had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Lisa Beaver, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Freshman John Hyden, from Mt. Carmel, had 10 kills, but San Diego State (1-5, 0-3) lost to Pepperdine, 15-11, 15-7, 15-13, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. game. Pepperdine is 9-0, 3-0.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State opened its season with a 9-0 nonconference victory over visiting Loyola Marymount (0-4). Among the winning Aztecs were Eva Olivarez, 6-3, 6-1, over Vicky Cordova; Susheel Gulati, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, over Julie Oshiro; and Patrick Henry graduate Sue Hawke, 6-2, 6-1, over Lara Labetich.

BOWLING

Jess Stayrook of San Diego earned the top seed for today’s nationally televised finals of the $175,000 PBA Quaker State Open in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Stayrook, who led all but the first round of the tournament, secured the top spot after rolling a 299 Friday. He finished with 10,347 pins, 49 more than Jason Couch.

Alan Bishop was next with 10,096 pins, followed by Derek Williams with 10,084. Stephen Hardy was fifth with 10,050 pins.
