Positive Attitude

I read (and saved) Amy Stark’s article “Positive Thinking Can Make 1991 Problems Ancient History” (Commentary, Jan. 5), as well as the letters by James Ranalli and Jeffry Winters. Both take the same tack, that the world is a terrible place, and that Dr. Stark is offering a simplistic, optimistic view that all the terrors in our cultures will disappear if we pretend the problems are not there.

I think both men need to carefully and critically read the original article. Stark says, “We solve difficulties by controlling how we feel . . . ,” and in her closing sentence, “We can choose to be positive and solve problems.”
