A strong earthquake shook the Tokyo area early today, jolting buildings and waking residents. At least 15 people were injured.

Japan’s Central Meteorological Agency said the quake, which had a magnitude of 5.7, was centered 50 miles deep and 16 miles south of Tokyo Bay.

The quake came the day after Tokyo had its heaviest snowfall in six years, 6.7 inches in the city and surrounding areas.

City residents, ill-prepared for more than a dusting of snow, picked at the slush with dustpans, garden shovels and brooms.
