Veteran tailback Roger Craig headed a group of 15 Raiders who were left unprotected on Plan B when NFL teams announced their free agent lists Saturday.

Craig, 31, signed as a Plan B free agent with the Raiders in 1991 after eight stellar seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. Craig was part of a Plan B package that included former 49er star Ronnie Lott, who had a Pro Bowl season in 1991 and was one of 37 Raiders who was protected.

Craig led the Raiders in rushing with 590 yards, but he was slowed all season by a nagging knee bruise suffered in training camp and averaged 3.5 yards per carry.

Other Raiders on the unprotected list included linebacker Tom Benson, defensive backs Derrick Crudup and Tahaun Lewis, offensive linemen James FitzPatrick, Reggie McElroy, Joel Patten and Rory Graves, wide receiver Jamie Holland, running backs Napoleon McCallum and Vance Mueller, nose tackle Roy Hart, tight end Mike Dyal, quarterback Vince Evans and linebacker Jerry Robinson.

Benson lost his starting outside linebacker position to Aaron Wallace in the playoffs. Robinson, 35, lost his starting spot to Winston Moss in training camp, played sparingly late in the season, and is probably headed for retirement.

Under the conditions of Plan B, implemented by the NFL in 1989, unprotected players have until April 1 to negotiate freely with any team but their own. After the deadline, players can return to their original teams.

The Raiders also announced Saturday they had traded backup cornerback Garry Lewis to the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed 1992 draft choice. Lewis was the Raiders’ seventh-round draft choice from Alcorn State in 1990.
