Burbank Airport Passenger Volume Hits Record High : Travel: The 3.7 million users are a 6% increase over 1990, when the total jumped almost 29% from the previous year.

Burbank Airport served more than 3.7 million passengers in 1991, marking the airport’s second consecutive record year, officials said Monday.

The annual total represents a 6% increase over 1990, when the passenger total jumped almost 29% from the previous year, airport spokeswoman Elly R. Mixsell said.

“These are the two highest years we’ve ever had in the history of the airport,” she said.

Mixsell said the two-year increase defies a downward national trend in air travel.

Burbank Airport--which is owned and operated by the cities of Burbank, Pasadena and Glendale--is served by six major airlines.

The increase in passengers came despite the pullout in May of USAir, an airline that at one time carried about one-third of the airport’s passengers, Mixsell said.

But the California routes abandoned by USAir were quickly picked up by other airlines, she said.

For example, after USAir left Burbank Airport, Southwest Airlines added six daily flights to Sacramento to its regular schedule of Oakland and Las Vegas flights, she said.

The largest increase in passenger service at Burbank Airport came from United Airlines, which carried more than 935,000 passengers, up 92% over 1990.
