Sergei Fedorov, one of the NHL’s youngest stars, almost won the game for Detroit. Pittsburgh’s Bryan Trottier, one of the NHL’s oldest stars, wouldn’t let him.

Pittsburgh’s new No. 1 line of Trottier, Mark Recchi and Kevin Stevens combined for four goals as the Penguins rallied twice to tie Detroit, 4-4, Monday night at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins are 7-0-4 in their last 11 games against the Red Wings.

Trottier, filling in for the injured Mario Lemieux, and Recchi scored two apiece as the Penguins withstood Fedorov’s two goals to rally from deficits of 2-0 and 4-3 and move back into third place in the Patrick Division, one point ahead of New Jersey.

The sixth-leading scorer in NHL history and the owner of five Stanley Cup rings, Trottier has played sparingly behind the Penguins’ top two centers, Lemieux and Ron Francis, for most of the season. With Lemieux out with back problems, Trottier has three goals in three games after scoring only five in Pittsburgh’s first 48 games.

Minnesota 4, Toronto 2--Brian Bellows broke a 2-2 second-period tie with his first goal in nine games as the North Stars ended the Maple Leafs’ four-game winning streak with a victory at Bloomington, Minn.

Bellows, who scored 90 goals in the last two seasons, got his 18th of this season at 2:35 of the second period as the Stars won for the second time in seven games.

Jim Johnson scored an empty-net goal to provide the final margin.
