New Jersey Relicenses Griffin’s Casino: State officials relicensed Merv Griffin’s Resorts Casino Hotel despite concerns about the long-term financial stability of Atlantic City’s first gaming hall. The Casino Control Commission lauded the casino, which opened in May, 1978, for its progress since emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August, 1990. Resorts said it has halved its debt, exceeded its revenue projections and undergone refurbishing. However, Chairman Steven Perskie said the casino has not devised a plan to pay interest and principal on $430 million worth of bonds left over from its bankruptcy restructuring.
