Los Angeles residents can legally dispose of dangerous household chemicals Saturday at a one-day hazardous waste roundup in Sylmar.

City workers will be at the Los Angeles Mission College parking lot, 13356 Eldridge Ave., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to collect such items as unwanted paint, motor oil and pesticides, and corrosive or flammable household chemicals. The service is free to the public.

Participants are advised to make sure containers are not leaking and to transport them in cardboard boxes, said Jackie David, spokeswoman for the city Household Hazardous Wastes Program.

The event is sponsored by the city’s Department of Public Works and Bureau of Sanitation and Unocal Corporation, which has donated $100,000 for each of six such roundups.
