A man indicated he had a weapon and held up a branch of the Bank of A. Levy in Ventura Thursday, authorities said.

It was the 18th robbery of a financial institution in Ventura County this year, continuing a spurt of such crimes that began in November, said FBI Special Agent Larry Dick.

The man entered the nearly empty bank at 2499 Harbor Blvd. and gave a teller a note demanding money, said Gary Auer, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Ventura office.

The amount taken was not disclosed.

Auer said descriptions of the robber do not match those of suspects in recent bank robberies. He was described by witnesses as cleanshaven, about 25 years old and wearing shorts and a striped T-shirt.

“He appears to be someone who has not robbed before in this area,” Auer said.

The robbery continued a three-month run on banks by area criminals, Dick said.

Only 24 bank robberies had been committed in the county by Nov. 15, but that number was matched during the last six weeks of the year, Dick said.

“And the higher rate has not slowed down,” Dick said.
