SAN CLEMENTE : Council to Revive Adjournment Rule

Share

After a more than five-hour meeting that ended at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, the City Council informally agreed to begin using a long-dormant policy that would automatically end council meetings at 11 p.m. unless a majority of council members vote otherwise.

“We’re often called upon to make difficult decisions at a late hour,” said Mayor Joe Anderson, who asked the council to revive the policy. “When we get to 11 p.m., if we’re not finished, I will ask for a motion to continue the rest of the agenda.”

Anderson said the council, which typically is in session until near midnight, could either reconvene the next day to finish business or delay it until its next meeting.

Councilwoman Candace Haggard called Anderson’s suggestion an “excellent idea” and said a similar policy was successful in shortening meetings when she was on the Planning Commission.

Councilman Scott Diehl said he hoped the policy would expedite the proceedings. “Maybe this will light a fire under us and get us through at 11 p.m.,” he said.
