A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge rescheduled a trial date in the case of Hank Gathers to March 23, and ruled that an alleged settlement between the Gathers family and the 12 defendants be discussed at a mandatory settlement conference March 2. Gathers, a Loyola Marymount star basketball player, died of a heart disorder on March 4, 1990, while in a game.
Documents filed by Bruce Fagel, an attorney representing the Gathers family, allege a verbal agreement with the school was reached last month to settle the case for $600,000, but the school reneged. The school denies the claim. The Gathers family originally sued for $32.5 million.
