South Pasadena : Historic Site Rules Change
A measure designed to bolster the protection of historic structures and districts in South Pasadena was tentatively approved by the City Council last week.
In a 4-1 vote, the council introduced revised guidelines for the Cultural Heritage Commission, the five-member advisory panel designated to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.
Under the proposed ordinance change, the commission would retain the power to recommend that a home or building be designated a historic landmark, even against the owner’s wishes. The City Council would have the final vote.
Councilman James Woollacott, the lone dissenter, argued that property owners should have a say in the matter.
Another amendment to the ordinance, first instituted in 1971, would require that any neighborhood seeking designation as a historic district must have the support of a majority of affected homeowners.
The council’s final vote is set for Feb. 19.
