Regarding an animal shelter volunteer who took a doomed puppy home without permission to save it from being euthanized (Digest, Jan. 29), how severe can her crime be? Instead of prosecuting her, I think that she should just be asked to pay the going fee for impounded animals and be told to refrain from repeating the offense.

Let’s go after the real criminals that must be apprehended and punished. The lady involved even found a home for the dog. She did it because she cared. Should she be punished for this mistake?
