NHL ROUNDUP : Hextall Shuts Out Nordiques at Quebec, 3-0

Share

As recently as four years ago, Ron Hextall was rated the top goaltender in the NHL. Injuries and illness have hampered the Philadelphia Flyer in the last couple of seasons.

Although he appears to be on the upswing again, Philadelphia fans boo him constantly, so it is not surprising that Hextall, 27, plays some of his best games on the road.

Hextall stopped 30 shots Saturday at Quebec to lead the Flyers to a 3-0 victory, ending a 10-game road winless streak.

Hextall gave the credit to his teammates. “Our defense has always been good since I’ve been with the Flyers, but shutouts aren’t important,” he said. “I just want victories.”

Hextall is 3-1-1 in his last five starts for the team with the worst record (19-25-10) in the Patrick Division.

The Nordiques have the worst record in the league (12-35-6). They have won only once in the last 15 games.

New Jersey 6, Boston 4--Adam Oates made an auspicious debut for the Bruins at Boston, but goaltender Chris Terreri of the Devils stole the show.

Oates, the NHL leader in assists, was obtained in a trade Friday with St. Louis. He set up two Boston goals.

Terreri stopped 38 shots, 15 of them in the last period, when the Bruins stormed the net.

Chicago 3, St. Louis 1--Jeremy Roenick scored his 40th goal with 6:25 left at St. Louis to break a 1-1 tie and move the Blackhawks within six points of first place in the Norris Division.
