Rig Count Rebounds 21: Led by gains in Oklahoma and Texas, the nation’s rig count rebounded from a record low to 674, Baker Hughes Inc. said. The weekly count is an index of drilling activity. It represents the number of rigs actively exploring for but not producing petroleum and natural gas. Baker Hughes, a tool maker, has kept track of the count since 1940. The rig count peaked at 4,500 in December, 1981. Before last week, the low was 663 in mid-1986. This week’s count still lagged far behind last year’s total of 997 for the same week. Of the rigs working this week, 383 were handling oil, 277 gas and 14 were listed as miscellaneous.
