E. Carrington Boggan; Lawyer Fought for Gay Rights
E. Carrington Boggan, 48, an attorney who represented gay clients in several key cases and helped found the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national gay rights organization. Boggan won reinstatement for Leonard Matlovich, the former Air Force sergeant discharged because he was a homosexual. The Air Force settled the case in 1980 with a $160,000 payment and an honorable discharge. Boggan also represented Vernon E. Berg, a Navy veteran, in a similar case with comparable results.
