YORBA LINDA : Council May Review Term Limit Proposal
- Share via
In July, the City Council will reconsider a proposal to limit council members to three consecutive terms if state lawmakers give local officials more leeway to adopt the restrictions.
Council members voted 4 to 1 in January to place a term limit on the city’s November ballot but only as an advisory measure. Councilman Gene Wisner proposed an advisory vote because there are concerns that the action would violate state law prohibiting term limits for most local elected offices.
City Atty. Leonard Hampel said several bills are pending before state lawmakers that, if passed, would allow term limits for council seats. The city’s proposal would allow a council member to serve up to 12 consecutive years. After two years out of office, the person could run again.
Last week, council members decided to consider the issue again in light of the possibility that state law might change by July, the deadline for placing or amending measures on the November ballot.
