Reporting on Reporters: Quick, who was the most visible reporter last year on network news? Scratch Rather, Brokaw and Jennings. The winner, for the third straight year, was NBC’s John Cochran, who appeared in 186 evening news stories, says the Center for Media and Public Affairs. A new study by the center also shows that white males dominated the network evening newscasts in 1991. Only four of the top 50 reporters were women, with one in every six news items (16%) reported by a woman, according to the study. NBC’s newscasts were the least diverse in terms of race and gender, while CBS was the most diverse. Researchers ranked all ABC, CBS and NBC reporters and anchors by the number of their stories and noted the race and gender of every reporter.
