The Saddleback Community College District will mark its 25th anniversary with a special celebration today.

The celebration, which begins at 11 a.m. at Saddleback College’s McKinney Theater, will be attended by federal, state and local representatives, district officials said.

The college district, which consists of Saddleback and Irvine Valley colleges, became the fourth community college district in Orange County and the 67th such district in the state on Feb. 14, 1967.

“The wisdom and confidence of the citizens of south Orange County have been amply justified in the 25 years of service provided by the colleges of the Saddleback Community College District,” said district Chancellor Richard Sneed.

The district has grown from a single-campus district with offices in a model home to a multicampus district that has served 586,889 students since it was founded.

In response to the growing population in south Orange County, the district has developed an ambitious capital construction plan at both existing campuses and has begun to look for a site for a third campus in the southern part of the district, said Diane Riopka, district spokeswoman.

Sneed will be master of ceremonies of today’s celebration, which will include remarks by John C. Connolly, president of the college district’s Board of Trustees, and Hans Vogel, the board’s first president.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Anthony R. Moiso, president and chief executive officer of the Santa Margarita Co.
