IRVINE : College Sees 9% Rise in Students

Share

Enrollment for the spring semester is up by 9% over last year at Irvine Valley College, the largest spring enrollment since the college opened in 1985.

An enrollment census taken last week showed that the college has 9,320 students, compared to the 8,522 students enrolled at this time last year, said Terry Burgess, vice president of instruction at the college.

“The student demand for classes and services continues to grow,” said Burgess. “We expect to finish the year with an overall enrollment growth of 12%.”

This fall, the college added 92 new class sections and plans to hire 10 new faculty members to keep up with the growing enrollment.

Burgess said the growing enrollment is related to growth in South County as well as the demand for job training during the recession. Also, a large number of students who are unable to get lower division courses at universities are enrolling in the college.

A second set of eight-week courses will begin on March 16, and students are encouraged to register as soon as possible. A single six-week summer session will begin June 29 and continue to Aug. 5.
