Award-winning guitarist David Starobin will perform Friday night in Claremont.

Guitarist David Starobin, an award-winning musician and record producer who performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic, the St. Louis Symphony and other ensembles, will present a free concert Friday evening at Pomona College.

Performing on a copy of a J. G. Staufer guitar, Starobin will play works by 19th-Century composers Mauro Giuliani, Giulio Regondi and Fernando Sor.

Starobin’s latest recording is a compact disc of solo works by Giuliani.

Starobin began classical guitar studies at age 7 and is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory. He founded Bridge Records Inc. in 1981 for the release of new music, standard classical repertoire and world music.

In 1988, Starobin was the first guitarist to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Prize and has been honored by Harvard University’s Fromm Foundation.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Bridges Hall of Music, 4th Street east of College Avenue,

Claremont.

On Saturday night, television and movie stars--including Ed Asner, Hal Holbrook, Earl Holliman and Carol Kane--will perform Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” at the Pasadena Playhouse to raise money for Shakespeare Festival/LA.

Tickets are $100 and $175 in tax-deductible donations, with the higher price guaranteeing VIP seating and a commemorative poster signed by the cast.

The 8 p.m. event, “Champagne and Shakespeare Romance,” includes a celebrity reception after the play. Shakespeare Festival/LA is a nonprofit theater company that donates food to organizations that feed the homeless and needy.
