A 69-year-old Escondido man was shot to death, police said, apparently after he discovered a burglar.

The body of Clayton Kraft was found in front of his home in the 2100 block of Royal Lytham Glen shortly after 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, police Lt. John Wilson said. Kraft, who lived alone, had been shot in the chest. A small revolver was found next to his body on the lawn.

Wilson said Kraft’s home had been ransacked and that a window screen had been removed.

“It looks like he went outside and confronted the burglar,” Wilson said. “We’re now investigating whether the gun used to kill Kraft belonged to him or the burglar.”

A neighbor told police he heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot or firecracker between 11 p.m. and midnight, Wilson said. Police are investigating whether any of Kraft’s possessions were taken.
