Officer Facing Assault Charge Will Quit, Chief Says

A Torrance police officer accused of assaulting a Lancaster woman has decided to resign from the department, effective Friday, Police Chief Joe De Ladurantey said.

Roland Sabara, 35, is charged with attempted kidnaping and battery for allegedly grabbing a 25-year-old woman and trying to force her into his car in Lancaster on Jan. 31. Sabara, who lives in the Antelope Valley, was off duty at the time of the incident.

A six-year veteran of the Torrance department, Sabara most likely would have been fired had he not resigned, De Ladurantey said.

“I sense that he could see the writing on the wall and what was imminent,” the chief said. “I don’t think he wanted to bring any further embarrassment on the department by dragging this thing out.” Sabara is scheduled to appear in Antelope Valley Municipal Court on Feb. 28 for arraignment on the felony charges against him.
