GARDEN GROVE : City OKs Sale of 13 Acres for Price Club

The City Council on Tuesday night gave final approval to the sale for $5 million of 13 acres of downtown land, which would become the site of a Price Club store.

The store, which city and Price Co. officials hope will open by year end, is expected to create 250 jobs in the city, attract the shopping dollars from neighboring communities, and provide an estimated $500,000 annually in sales tax revenue to the city coffers.

“This should result in a boon to the community,” said Councilman Mark Leyes at the hearing. “To move a project like this in the middle of a recession is really what city and local governments work for.”

According to the agreement, the store will be between Garden Grove and Century boulevards. The Redevelopment Agency spent $8 million to acquire and develop the land to attract the company to the city.

“This is really the kickoff, nothing could go forward until this was complete,” said Gregory Devereaux, community development director. “The council is very pleased that the Price Club is coming.”

The council has said it wants to expedite the necessary environmental reports and contract agreements so that the proposed store can open this year.
