Proposed Code for Filmmakers

Medved suggests that most American moviegoers are so innocent and morally angelic that they will be corrupted by any movie or TV show daring enough to depict real life. “Beauty and the Beast” is a lovely film for both children and adults, but give me “The Prince of Tides” with its honest and edifying probe into the pain of family dysfunction or “JFK,” which at the very least fosters healthy debate on a murky chapter in our recent history.
Both Medved and Mahony are correct in stating that gratuitous violence in movies and on TV is pervasive, prompting a necessary tightening of existing regulations and codes. But let us not replace reality and honesty with fairy tales; those are best left to children’s cartoons.
