SPORTSCOPE : Santa Clara Women Overpower Loyola

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, playing without leading scorer and rebounder Joelle Longobardi, lost to Santa Clara, 85-41, in a West Coast Conference game on Thursday night at Santa Clara.

It was the ninth consecutive loss for the Lions (6-16 overall, 0-9 in WCC play) and 15th in 16 games.

Melissa King, who was the WCC player of the year last season, had a game-high 19 points for Santa Clara, which trails league leader Portland by a game.

Loyola, which dressed only eight players, was led by Tanya White, who scored 17 points. The Lions were out-rebounded, 48-23.

Longobardi, a 6-foot senior forward who averages 13.9 points and 7.5 rebounds, was suspended by Coach Todd Corman for disciplinary reasons. She is expected to play Saturday night when Loyola plays at the University of San Diego (7-13, 2-6) at 5:20 p.m.

San Diego won the first game between the teams, 69-58, last week at Gersten Pavilion.

San Diego is led by sophomore forward Jill Shaver, who averages 14.7 points.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team will play UCLA in a nonconference game at 2 p.m. today at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Dominguez Hills (2-1) will also play host to Sonoma State at 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

Dominguez Hills is ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

UCLA and Sonoma State are both 2-2. Sonoma State was ranked 29th in NCAA Division II in a preseason poll by Collegiate Baseball.

The Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring an ongoing boxing program for boys 9 to 18 from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday at Rogers Park, 400 W. Beach Ave.
