COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Earns a Split in Softball

After losing to 10th-ranked Texas A&M;, 4-3, Cal State Northridge’s softball team racked up 12 hits to defeat fifth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 8-4, in the Arizona tournament Saturday.

Texas A&M; (2-2) scored four earned runs off Jackie Volkert in the first inning. Volkert (1-1) allowed six hits and a walk. Kathy Blake relieved Volkert in the second inning and threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

Jen Fleming’s two-run home run in the third cut the Aggies’ lead to 4-2. Denise Swank and Tamara Ivie each had two hits for Northridge (4-7).

Northridge jumped to a 3-0 lead against Fullerton in the first inning on a two-run double by Missy Cress (two for four). A two-run home run by Kim Oakes in the fifth gave the Matadors a 7-0 lead.

Oakes’ home run is the fourth by a Matador in as many games. Northridge hit only four home runs last season.

Beth Calcante, Nicole Wiggins and Ivie each had two hits for the Matadors.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern Utah 66, Cal State Northridge 63--Angie Tanner made four free throws in the last 19 seconds to give the Thunderbirds (5-17) their third consecutive win over the host Matadors.

Northridge (1-22) was led by Shagarro Lattin with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Christine Rumfola added 14 points and Dawn Broline had 12.

Ventura 77, Oxnard 38--Cori Herman scored 26 points and Venessa Hackett added 16 to lead host Ventura (23-6, 6-0 in division play) in a Western State Conference North Division game.

Karen Reveles scored 22 points for Oxnard (2-23, 0-6).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 112, West L.A. 70--The Monarchs made a school-record 15 three-point shots and coasted to a Western State Conference South Division win at home.

Randy Brown led Valley (16-13, 5-3) with 22 points, and Russell Baldwin added 20.

Ijumaa Armstrong paced the Oilers with 31 points.

Antelope Valley 75, Citrus 74--D.J. Jackson scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help the Marauders (17-12, 11-3) clinch a share of the Foothill Conference championship.

Whittier 80, Cal Lutheran 74--Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 32 points for Cal Lutheran, but the Kingsmen (11-11, 7-3) lost the SCIAC game at Whittier.

Master’s 89, Christian Heritage 87 (OT)--Jason Webster scored 29 points to lead the Mustangs (19-8) in an NAIA District 3 game.
