NHL ROUNDUP : Rangers Get Tie in Final Second
- Share via
Darren Turcotte scored with a half-second remaining in regulation at New York, lifting the Rangers to a 3-3 tie with the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.
The tie extended New York’s unbeaten streak against Vancouver to 10-0-2. The Canucks are 0-5-1 in their last six games.
With goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck on the bench for an extra attacker, the Rangers stormed the Vancouver net in the final seconds. Mike Gartner fired a low shot that goaltender Kirk McLean blocked. After Brian Leetch and Tim Kerr failed to poke in the rebound, Turcotte scored on a final swipe.
Turcotte’s goal neutralized the earlier heroics of rookie Pavel Bure, who made up for missing a second-period penalty shot by scoring his second goal midway through the third period to give the Canucks a 3-2 lead.
Montreal 8, Minnesota 0--Brent Gilchrist scored three goals for the Canadiens and Patrick Roy got his fifth shutout of the season, the 18th of his seven-year career, at Montreal.
Shayne Corson and Mike McPhee each added two goals for Montreal.
Gilchrist, who has never scored more than nine goals in a season during his four-year NHL career, has 20 this year.
Corson, returning from a one-game team-imposed suspension, picked up his 12th and 13th goals, and McPhee added his 13th and 14th. Gilbert Dionne had the other for the Adams Division-leading Canadiens.
Detroit 5, St. Louis 3--Paul Ysebaert’s goal with 1:22 to play, his second of the game, broke a tie at Detroit as the Red Wings won their third in a row.
Ysebaert intercepted Ron Wilson’s clearing pass and fired a shot that deflected off Garth Butcher’s skate and past Curtis Joseph. Ray Sheppard added an empty-net goal with 45 seconds left.
Brett Hull’s 57th goal gave the Blues a 1-0 lead at 6:46 of the first period, but Detroit’s Russian stars, Vladimir Konstantinov and Sergei Fedorov, teamed up to tie the score five minutes later, Fedorov scoring his 23rd goal.
N.Y. Islanders 5, Winnipeg 4--Tom Fitzgerald scored on a two-on-one break 2:05 into overtime for the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.
Thomas Steen had tied the score for the Jets with 1:06 to play in regulation, negating a three-goal comeback by the Islanders that had given New York a 4-3 lead.
But Fitzgerald, carrying the puck, got goalie Bob Essensa out of position and backhanded a shot into the empty net for his sixth goal of the season. Ray Ferraro assisted on the play.
