Two Thousand Oaks men were arrested at the Janss Mall after sheriff’s deputies caught them rifling through mailboxes in the mall post office, authorities said Tuesday.

Jonathan Morey, 22, and Richard Lange, 25, were apprehended about 10:15 p.m. Monday after deputies on foot patrol observed Morey stuffing his jacket with envelopes, Lt. Bill Montijo said.

The two men were arrested on suspicion of mail theft and booked at the Ventura County Jail, Sgt. Bob Larson said.

Morey was freed after posting bail, Larson said, but charges against Lange were dropped.

Morey is scheduled to be arraigned March 20 at the Ventura County Hall of Justice.

Mail theft is a federal crime punishable by up to five years for each piece of mail stolen, said Postal Inspector Pamela Prince in Los Angeles.

It doesn’t appear that U.S. Treasury checks, credit cards or other items of significant value were taken from the mailboxes, Prince said.

Because there was no evidence of a forced entry into the mailboxes, Prince said an investigation of how the crime occurred was ongoing.
