The International Ice Hockey Federation refused U.S. hockey officials’ request that Swedish forward Mats Naslund be suspended for the rest of the Olympic hockey tournament as punishment for checking and injuring defenseman Greg Brown during the United States’ 3-3 tie with Sweden on Monday.

“We received the referee’s report,” IIHF Secretary General Jan-Ake Edvinsson said Tuesday. “Naslund got a five-minute penalty and a game (misconduct). There will be no further action. He will be available to play for Sweden in the next game.”

Brown was released from a hospital in Moutiers on Tuesday morning, but was not available for Tuesday night’s game.

Brown, who suffered a concussion, broken nose and facial cuts that required 12 stitches, attended Tuesday’s game. Coach Dave Peterson said Brown might skate today and might play in the team’s semifinal game Friday.

U.S. forward Ted Drury sat out Tuesday’s game because of a sore left knee and will also skate today.

French forward Philippe Bozon had some bitter feelings toward the U.S. team after a physical third period that resulted in players milling around after the game.

“I don’t know why the game has to go like that with five minutes left and they’re winning, 4-1,” he said. “It’s bad stuff. It’s not good for the public. I don’t think the French team is starting fights.”

Peterson, who said both sides were culpable, bristled when asked about his refusal to shake the hands of Swedish Coach Conny Evensson and assistant coach Curt Lundmark after Monday’s 3-3 tie.

“Maybe you should ask if the Swedish coaches shook hands with us in Chamonix,” he said, referring to a 3-2 U.S. victory Feb. 5 that ended with animosity between the teams.

CBS broadcaster Mike Emrick has had a tough Olympics. After developing a sore throat that prevented him from calling a game last week, Emrick suffered a broken right wrist in a fall on a staircase Monday. He worked the U.S.-Sweden game as scheduled before having his wrist examined and placed in a sling.
