South El Monte : Hospital Site Opposed

Share

The City Council and the Rosemead Improvement District Board voted last week to oppose use of a Rosemead Boulevard parcel as the site for a new county hospital.

The two groups, however, also approved motions to reconsider another site in South El Monte on vacant land near the intersection of the Pomona Freeway and Santa Anita Avenue.

The votes followed an overflow turnout at Thursday’s council meeting to hear County Supervisor Gloria Molina discuss the proposed location of the 340-bed hospital on 30 acres between Rosemead Boulevard and Chico Avenue, north of Rush Street and south of Garvey Avenue. This parcel is one of two being considered by the county for the facility.

To accommodate the crowd, the meeting was moved from the Council Chamber to the larger Senior Center nearby.

Speakers generally opposed the plan. Part of the site was occupied by the old Starlite Drive-In, and a flea market now operates there on weekends. Many said that hundreds of small vendors who make a living at the flea market would be displaced by the facility.

Council members left with the meeting in progress for a scheduled meeting with the Rosemead Improvement District Board, after which the votes were taken.
