A Fillmore man was wounded in a drive-by shooting as he used the pay phone outside a market, authorities said Wednesday.

No motive was apparent in the late-night shooting Tuesday in which Marcos Herrera Paniagua, 21, was shot in the thigh, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Godfrey.

Paniagua was transported to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The shooting occurred at 10:35 p.m. outside Gil’s Market at 4th and B streets in Fillmore, Godfrey said.

Paniagua said he noticed a car cruise by slowly and then return several minutes later, Godfrey said. As the car passed, Paniagua said he saw a passenger in the back seat fire three shots at him before the car sped off.

Although the motive for the shooting remains unclear, Godfrey said authorities do not believe Paniagua is associated with any gang.
