Ink on its Face: Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young felt he was dumped on when the Detroit News said there was contaminated soil at a new city housing development. But now the mayor says he’s dealing with a paper tiger: A lab study he commissioned found that levels of aluminum, copper, zinc and manganese in the paper itself exceeded many Environmental Protection Agency limits. Maybe so, but was hizzonor papering over the problem at the housing development? Coleman claims the units are “perfectly safe.”

* Just Trucking Along: Jane Fonda, the 1950s sex kitten, ‘60s anti-war protester, ‘70s feminist and ‘80s entrepreneur, set happiness with her hubby as her new mission, and she has no apologies for those who don’t like it. “I’m sorry if some people may be disappointed or think there’s something wrong with my being seen in evening dresses at soirees with Ted Turner. I’m happy. . . I wish I had 60 years to be with Ted instead of what may be 30 or 40.”

* Not the Good Humor Man: Spending the night handcuffed is not fun, and former comedian Dick Gregory was not joking when he clamped some cuffs late Tuesday to his wrists and to the front door of a federal courthouse in East St. Louis, Ill., in support of Haitian refugees. The funny-man-turned-nutritionist was supporting former dance and choreographer Katherine Dunham, 82, who sparked protest of the government’s forced removal of Haitians.
