Culver City : Democrats Back Gourley

Share

The Culver City Democratic Club has endorsed the reelection bid of City Councilman Steven Gourley.

At a candidates forum last week, Gourley was the only one of six candidates running for three City Council seats to receive the two-thirds vote necessary for endorsement.

The 157-member club is the city’s largest Democratic Party organization. Democrats constitute 59% of the city’s 19,641 registered voters, according to the registrar-recorder’s office.

Incumbent James D. Boulgarides received the second highest number of votes, followed by Mollie (Lee) Welinsky, then a tie between Albert Vera and Richard Alexander. Donald Lane, a relative newcomer to Culver City politics, did not receive any votes.

The smaller Fox Hills-Ladera Heights Democratic Club, which jointly sponsored the Feb. 12 forum, endorsed three candidates: Gourley, Boulgarides and Welinsky. Only a simple majority vote was required to win an endorsement.
