West Los Angeles : Man Arrested in Hit-Run
- Share via
Acting on a tip from a witness, the California Highway Patrol has arrested a West Los Angeles man and charged him in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist.
Authorities said a brown Mercedes-Benz with a license plate registered to Gary Richard Marquis, 48, was traveling west on Wilshire Boulevard just west of the San Diego Freeway at 5:15 p.m. Saturday when it struck bicyclist Shinichi Yamada of Westwood.
CHP investigator Jane Curtis said the driver of the car continued westbound, pulled to the curb, saw Yamada’s body lying on the ground, and then took off. An observer took down the license plate number, called the CHP, and authorities arrested Marquis at his home.
Marquis was booked on suspicion of felony drunk driving, vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run. He was released Sunday on $75,000 bail. A court hearing has been set for March 17.
Authorities are still looking for other witnesses, who can contact Curtis at the CHP’s Culver City office at (310) 670-0938.
