SOAKING UP THE PAST: Tonight’s awards gala for the Festival of Whales in Dana Point turns to a little-known page from the city’s past for its theme. The Rum Runners Banquet takes its cue from the Prohibition era, when then-remote Dana Point was a favorite drop-off point for illegal liquor, smuggled in small boats from floating speak-easies anchored offshore. . . . “Dana Point has an interesting and checkered past,” says Pete Johnson, spokesman for the festival, which opens today with events throughout the city.
