Karlsson Sets a Record in Hammer for PLNC

Per Karlsson, a transfer from Brigham Young, on Friday established a Point Loma Nazarene College stadium record in the hammer throw at PLNC’s first track and field meet of the season.

Karlsson, a native of Sweden native, had a throw of 230 feet 6 for PLNC, which lost to Azusa Pacific, 89-74. In the women’s meet, Azusa Pacific cruised to a 98-35 victory.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Roommates Taunya Johnson and Tanya Lauer won the deciding match as 12th-ranked San Diego State turned back 16th-ranked Mississippi, 5-4.

In No. 3 doubles, Johnson and Lauer were playing with the team score tied at 3-3. They defeated Pascale Piquemal and Ivy Conoley, 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the victory. SDSU improved to 4-0.

Laura Richards snapped the Ali Yoshimoto’s four-match winning streak with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles as 18th-ranked University of San Diego blanked UC Irvine, 8-0.

The Toreras (4-1), won all their matches in straight sets.

Point Loma Nazarene got easy victories from Monica Clancy and Kim Wright at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and beat visiting Claremont Mudd, 7-2. Clancy defeated Vicki Colf, 6-2, 6-4, and Wright beat Julie Keeler, 6-0, 6-2. The Crusaders (2-1) host Pomona Pitzer and Redlands today.

BASEBALL

SDSU parlayed four Cal State Los Angeles errors in the first inning into six runs and coasted to an 11-3 victory at Smith Field. SDSU’s John Wagner went three for four, including a triple, and scored twice.

The Aztecs improved to 6-4, and Cal State Los Angeles fell to 5-7.

UC San Diego swept a doubleheader from Christ College Irvine in nonconference play at Irvine.

Brent Hansen struck out five and Ernie Isola was two for three and drove in the winning run in a 1-0 victory in the first game. In the second game, Dominic Dirksen had two RBIs and doubled as the Tritons (4-0, six rainouts) upended CCI, 5-1. Dave Lubs and David Rex picked up two hits each for UCSD.

SOFTBALL

UCSD fell to 2-1 with a 4-1 loss to Cal State Bakersfield at the Cal State San Bernardino tournament. Diana Moreno (1-1) was the loser. Faith Franke drove in the Tritons’ run on a fielder’s choice. Tournament play continues today.

USD routed Occidental in a season-opening doubleheader at the USD Softball Complex, 10-0 and 9-1. Former Mission Bay High standout Tiffany Wasilewski (1-0), a 21-game winner last year, pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Hillary Savage (1-0) had a two-hitter in the second game. Aimee Reinard (5 RBI) drove in the game-winning run in both games.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fresno Pacific opened up a 15-point halftime lead against Point Loma Nazarene, and it stuck as the Crusaders fell, 87-70, in a District 3 semifinal game at Fresno.

Rochelle Lightner lead all scorers with 28 points for PLNC. The Crusaders cut Fresno Pacific’s lead to nine points with six minutes left, but couldn’t get closer.
