A man was in stable condition Saturday after being shot as he sat in a car at a traffic light by a man from another car, police said.

Manuel Moreno Navarro, 37, of Santa Ana was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment of a gunshot wound in the groin, said Sgt. Gary Bruce of the Santa Ana Police Department. Police arrested three men suspected in the 10 a.m. shooting about a mile away.

Police still do not know what prompted the men to pull alongside the Ford Mustang carrying Navarro and shoot him at the intersection of 1st and Fairview Streets. “The motive is unknown,” Bruce said.

One of the men, riding as a passenger in a gray Jeep Cherokee, stepped out of the Jeep, walked up to Navarro and told him to roll down his window. When Navarro refused, the man pulled out a handgun and fired into the car, hitting Navarro in the groin, Bruce said.

The Mustang’s driver, who was not identified, flagged down a police officer at 1st Street and Harbor Boulevard and described the three men and the Jeep.

The Jeep was spotted by police at 20th and English streets as it pulled into a residential driveway.

Arrested were the driver, Michael Ramirez, 25, of Santa Ana and passengers Fernando Orozco, 24, of Santa Ana and Johnny Acosta, 22, of Riverside. Police declined to say whether they believe Orozco or Acosta pulled the trigger.

The men were taken to Orange County Jail, where they may be charged for assault with a deadly weapon.
