ORANGE : Schools to Consider Volunteer Tutoring

Share

A pilot program that will recruit volunteers to tutor Orange Unified School District students will be considered for adoption by the Board of Trustees this week.

The program will match skilled, retired professionals with two or three students for tutoring sessions in a range of academic subjects.

“The idea is to immediately improve the quality of education we’re giving our children,” said Trustee Robert Viviano, who proposed the program. “We have many illustrious retired people in our community who are steeped in math and science and other expertise who are an important resource for us.”

The program is still in the planning stages, but school officials said it will be offered free to students who need remedial help and those who merely want to enrich their classroom education. Parents or teachers can refer students to tutoring, or students may choose to sign up themselves.

District officials hope to have the program in place by April. Tutoring will be offered one afternoon a week at three school sites--one senior, middle and elementary school. Tutoring would eventually be available throughout the district.

“The only limitation here is the number of volunteers who are qualified and the demand” for tutoring, Viviano said.

The Orange Unified School District serves about 25,000 students from Orange, Garden Grove, Villa Park, Anaheim, Anaheim Hills and Silverado Canyon.

The seven-member board of trustees is expected to vote on the tutoring program at its meeting Thursday.
