Marine’s Body Recovered From Copter That Crashed in Ocean
Navy divers Monday recovered the body of a Tustin Marine lost since a crash-landing in the ocean almost two weeks ago, officials said.
Divers pulled the body of Lance Cpl. Jeffrey B. Johns, 22, of Uniontown, Ohio, from a sunken U.S. Marine Corps helicopter that crashed Feb. 12 in the ocean off Ventura County, said Marine Corps Capt. Betsy Sweatt.
The Marines will hold a memorial service for Johns on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Marine Corps Tustin Chapel, Sweatt said.
Johns, an avionics technician, was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-161 at the Tustin Marine Corps air base. The CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter was on its way to Northern California from Tustin for routine training when it apparently developed engine trouble and crashed.
Eight other Marines in the helicopter were rescued from the water.
